The first chapter begins with the explanation of the war field just prior to the commencement of the war.
This chapter briefs about the important kings of both sides of the armies, mindset of Duryodhana, sounds of Conch shells, Arjuna's confusion, and Arjuna's regret not to engage in the war.
At end of the chapter, Arjuna states to Bhagavan Sri Krishna that if he kills his own kinsmen for merely getting the kingdom and the pleasure, he will attain the sinful state.
Further, Arjuna explains that he cannot even hold his Gandiva [bow] in his hand as his body was trembling.
He is seen lamenting with lot of distress in his mind.
